Arena rules
Square Jungle Arena is played in the Arena format from Lichess and follows Lichess's Arena rules. Here's how they work.
What is an arena?
An arena is a race, not a knockout. Everyone plays as many games as they can before the clock runs out, and the most points wins. The faster you play, the more games you get, and the more points you can score.
Getting in
Join any time before the start, or jump in late if it's already running. You can leave whenever you want, and your points stay.
Finding opponents
Tap Start playing and we pair you with someone close to you in the standings. After each game, tap Next game when you're ready for another. Waits stay short, but you won't necessarily face everyone.
Every game has a countdown for the first move. Miss it and you lose the game.
Points
A win is 2 points, a draw is 1, a loss is 0. A draw in the first 10 moves scores nothing. After a draw, more draws only score if they go past move 30, until you win again. A loss doesn't reset this, only a win does.
Streaks
Win two in a row and you're on a streak. Your games count double from then on, so a win is worth 4 and a draw 2, until you don't win one. Two wins followed by a draw is 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 points. Watch for the flame next to your name.
Taking a break
Between games, take as long as you like: we only pair you again when you tap Next game. Done for the day? Tap Leave tournament. Your points stay, and you can come back before the end. Just don't disappear mid-game. Your clock keeps running either way.
When it ends
Near the end, we stop pairing new games. When the arena clock hits zero, the standings are final and the winner is announced. If players are tied on points, tournament performance decides. You can finish a game that's still going, but it won't count toward your points.
Your rating
Arena games are rated, so they count toward your normal Blitz rating just like any other game.
Treasure Hunt
Treasure Hunt is a side quest with its own leaderboard and its own prizes. It runs alongside the arena without affecting your arena points, and anyone can win it, whatever their level. Not interested? Ignore it and just play.
A plane full of the world's best chess players went down over the jungle. Everyone walked away, but their most precious things ended up scattered across the jungle floor.
Finding treasure
- Every game hides 10 treasures between the two armies, on ranks 3 to 6. Nobody can see where, and they change from game to game.
- Be the first to land a piece or pawn on a treasure's square, from either side, to collect its points. The square lights up when you find one. Landing there again later finds nothing.
- Treasures fade after move 40, so hunt early. Move 40 can still find one, and whatever is still hidden after it is gone.
- After the game, the board shows you how many points you collected.
What counts
- Like arena points, only games that finish before the arena clock hits zero count.
- Treasure points go to Take Take Take players, matched by the Lichess account connected to Take Take Take.
- Treasure is only found by moves actually played in the game. A player whose app reports a move they didn't play loses their treasure from that game.
Treasure Hunt winner
When the arena ends and its games are scored, we draw one winner among everyone who found treasure, and they win a Nymzo board.
- The more treasure points you collect, the better your chance. A player with 30 points has three times the chance of a player with 10, but anyone with points can win.
- The winner is shown in the app on the tournament page.
