The match consists of 12 classical games. The first player to reach 6.5 points will be declared the winner. Each game will have a time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move one. If the match ends in a 6-6 tie, tiebreaks involving rapid and, if necessary, blitz games will determine the champion.
The Women's World Chess Championship 2025 is scheduled from April 1 - 23, in China. The first six games will be held in Shanghai from April 1 - 10, followed by the remaining games and potential tiebreaks in Chongqing from April 11 - 23.
This championship match features reigning champion Ju Wenjun and challenger Tan Zhongyi, who earned her spot by winning the Women's Candidates Tournament in 2024. Notably, this is a rematch of their 2018 encounter, where Ju Wenjun claimed the title.
