Round 5

Norway Chess 2025

Commented by: Eirik Aarnes

A classic rivalry is about to commence!

The stakes couldn't be higher in today's matchup between Fabiano Caruana and Magnus Carlsen, as a loss for either player could change the course of Norway Chess 2025 entirely.

Caruana trails just behind Magnus in the standings and is one of the few players who aren't afraid of going all out against the former world champion in the classical portion. While Magnus hasn't shown the best form in the armageddon tiebreakers, there's no doubt that he's a force to be reckoned with in the faster time controls, giving Caruana all the more incentive to make the most out of the game with the white pieces.

The Norwegian #1 will struggle to find chances in the classical portion against the ever-solid Caruana and likely has to get to armageddon to fight for the extra point. A win against the American there would guarantee him a clear lead heading into the final stretch of the tournament, and Magnus should be the favorite once play speeds up despite his recent tiebreaker results.

Let's see what the two titans have in store for us today!

3

Spanish openinG!

Caruana opts for a deep, theoretical line that's very popular at the highest level.

The main move in this opening, looking to kick Caruana's bishop away with tempo.

-14:-58 a6

Caruana quickly retreats his bishop.

-01:-54:-20 Ba4
4

Magnus quickly gets his knight into play, putting pressure on Caruana's pawn in the center while preparing to get his king to safety.

5

Caruana quickly castles, ready to counter a capture in the center with a pin against the knight.

We're still in an incredibly well-studied position, and both players are still in preparation.

-01:-37:-09 O-O
5

Magnus reapplies the threat of capturing the center pawn by removing the threats of a potential pin against his king.

-01:-54:-15 Be7
6

Interesting decision by Caruana!

Caruana now decides to capture Magnus' knight, softening up his pawn in the center and giving him doubled pawns. Magnus has gained compensation in form of the bishop pair.

The concept Caruana is playing for is common, but not in this move order. This is clearly a part of Caruana's preparation, and we'll have to wait and see what Caruana has in store.

7

Caruana defends the pawn that was under attack, reapplying the threat of capturing Magnus' pawn in the center.

-01:-54:-30 Re1

Caruana has repeated a variation played in the World Championship 2023!

This exact variation was played in the first round of the world championship between Nepo and Ding Liren, meaning that both players should be familiar with it. It seems that Caruana has found an improvement compared to what Nepo did, and we'll see if Magnus wants to walk down the same route or do something different.

7

Magnus continues in accordance to the game in 2023, which ended in a draw.

It will be up to Caruana to prove that this approach will give him chances to push for a win.

-01:-42:-46 Nd7
8

Caruana continues by expanding in the center, looking to gain control over the dark squares.

-01:-47:-38 d4
8

Magnus avoids Caruana's preparation!!

Instead of trying to find out what Caruana had in mind, he decides to opt for a new approach!

Magnus' pawn was being threatened, and he defends it with this move. This approach seems a bit slow, however, and it's clear that Magnus has chosen this approach to avoid any deep planning that was made beforehand.

15:40 Bf6

Magnus in the confessional: "Why didn't I anticipate this earlier?"

Magnus went into the confessional and explained that his approach was, in fact, made to avoid any preparation from Caruana. His plan behind the decision was making a "move so uncritical that he hasn't analyzed it," painfully aware that this particular variation was played during the 2023 world championships.

The decision seems to have thrown Caruana off, and we'll have to see if his practical approach will pay dividends!

9

Caruana finally makes a decision!

As Magnus had hoped, Caruana was caught off guard by Magnus' last move and spent 20 minutes trying to find a strong response. He ends up choosing one of the more natural moves in the position, lending additional support to his center pawn.

-01:-35:-49 Be3
9

Magnus quickly castles, delaying any big decisions in the center for now.

-01:-27:-24 O-O
10

Strong reply by Caruana!

Caruana spent his time well, and his response is one of the critical ones in the position. He has now managed to maintain strong control over the dark squares in the center, and Magnus' knight is stuck in an awkwardly defensive role.

This also means that Magnus' bishop is struggling to get into play. Caruana has managed to gain a comfortable edge out of the opening, and Magnus will have to solve some concrete issues to avoid ending up in a worse position.

-01:-33:-36 c3
10

Magnus in a cramped position

Magnus opts to get his rook out, hoping to take over the role of his knight and allowing it to relocate at a later stage.

Caruana has gained a space advantage and is still posing some critical questions to Magnus' center control, and there's no doubt that he has gained the initiative out of the opening.

-01:-29:-55 Re8
11

Caruana continues his natural development, getting his knight into play.

-01:-25:-34 Nbd2
11

Magnus gives up the center

Magnus decides to capture in the center, as leaving the tension while moving his knight would give Caruana a very strong initiative.

His decision has come with the downside of giving Caruana strong control in the center, and there's no doubt that he remains better in this position. Magnus will at least get some much-needed coordination, and his bishop pair gives him some long-term compensation.

-01:-23:-26 exd4
12

Caruana quickly recaptures with a pawn, giving him favorable control over the center. While Caruana has the stronger position, play remains dynamic.

-01:-13:-48 cxd4
12

Magnus finally redeploys his knight, giving some breathing room to his light-squared bishop.

-52:-06 Nf8
13

Caruana pressures the queenside

Caruana finally decides to get his queen into play, allowing his final rook to get into the game while pressuring against Magnus' queenside.

Magnus still has some problems to solve, mainly finding a stable home for his light-squared bishop. Caruana's last move is hindering Magnus from expanding on the queenside by putting pressure on his potentially weak pawn.

-47:-03 Qc2
13

Magnus moves his knight towards the kingside.

42:33 Ng6
14

Caruana maintains his space advantage

Another quiet move from Caruana which restricts the movement of Magnus' light-squared bishop. He now avoids any threat of Magnus against Caruana's light square diagonal on the kingside later down the line.

In all, Caruana maintains his strong clamp against Magnus' position. While there's still no crisis, there's no doubt that Caruana has successfully maintained his comfortable position.

-01:-04:-20 h3
14

Magnus starts applying counterpressure

Magnus now attempts to gain some space of his own by pushing his pawn down the board on the queenside. It's essential for him to try to make some counterplay going, as sitting still will allow Caruana to slowly make advancements in the center.

16:52 a5
15

Caruana allows Magnus' advancement

Another natural move by Caruana, now getting his final piece into the game. This, however, allows Magnus to push further down the board, potentially giving him crucial space on that side.

The game is still in its maneuvering phase, and we're expecting a long match with slow improvements for both sides.

-01:-07:-40 Rad1
15

Magnus doesn't hesitate in getting his pawn further down the board, grabbing space while also allowing his rook to potentially get into the game at a later stage.

-01:-06:-46 a4
16

Caruana reveals his intention!

Caruana has seen Magnus' plan beforehand and very quickly replies by rerouting his knight toward the queenside. He intends to put pressure on Magnus' pawn that's far advanced, making it difficult to defend.

03:27 Nb1

It appears that Magnus got what he wanted out of the opening, as this situation is both dynamic and unique with chances for both sides. We're still far away from seeing a clear resolution to the tensions of the position, and small improvements for both sides continue.

If Magnus successfully manages to grab his desired space on the queenside without big concessions to his position or losing material, he may get chances in an endgame due to his bishop pair. For now, though, he has to worry about the pawn that has been a very clear target in his position.

Caruana still is the one with an initiative, but it's not yet clear how he will make meaningful progress in this difficult, strategic position.

16

Magnus decides on a solution to the problem

This move is clearly intended to get his pawn further down the board, getting it out of the grasp of Caruana's knight. Magnus has successfully managed to grab space on the queenside, giving him hope of counterplay later down the line.

-14:-41 Be7
17

Massive think by Caruana!!

He eventually opts for what's considered the best move, pressuring Magnus' pawn by getting his knight into the game. Magnus now has to make a decision as to how he should meet the threat on the board.

Importantly, though, both players are running dangerously low on their clocks. Play remains complicated, and time may be a deciding factor in this game.

-37:-23 Nc3
17

Magnus more or less immediately has his response ready, defending his pawn indirectly by applying a pin against Caruana's knight.

-50:-26 Bb4
18

Caruana breaks in the center!

The American finally decides to resolve any tension in the center, and play is heating up. This is a strong another strong move, abusing Magnus' lack of space to create tactical threats on the board.

Play remains complicated, and the next couple of moves will decide whether Caruana will end up with an advantage in this game. Only a single move ensures that Magnus maintains equality!

-43:-27 d5

There are tons of variations that now have to be considered for Magnus, and any rash decision may cost him dearly. His queen is exposed, and Caruana is using his control over the only half-open file as means to effectively nullify Magnus' pin.

18

Magnus goes wrong!

Finding the best way forward was difficult, and Magnus failed to find it! Caruana will now manage to create several weaknesses in Magnus' position.

All hope is not lost due to Magnus potentially managing to create counterplay on the kingside, but Caruana now has an objective advantage in this game!

-37:-25 Qe7
19

Strong move by Caruana!

Before giving Magnus strategic concessions, Caruana first poses a question to Magnus' bishop. If Magnus trades it away, he will lose his only long-term advantage of the position, but retreating will give Magnus a structural deficit.

This is a tough situation for Magnus, as no great option is available. He now has to make a practical choice as to what will give him chances to hold on.

-38:-12 a3
19

LOW ON TIME!!

Magnus eventually decides to retreat his bishop, keeping play complicated but accepting a permanent weakness on his queenside.

Both players' clocks are running dangerously low which still could be a deciding factor in this game. Caruana is in a clearly better position, but the overall situation remains uncertain.

-29:-12 Bd6
20

Ambitious choice by Caruana!

Rather than creating a pawn weakness, Caruana instead opts to get his bishop into the game first, putting additional pressure on the dark squares and preparing to advance further down the center.

Another strong reply by Caruana, who is now threatening to push his pawn further down the board and is threatening to win Magnus' bishop.

11:36 Bd4
20

Magnus is forced to move his queen to avoid his dark-squared bishop from getting trapped, and he finds the best way to get it out of the way.

The situation remains incredibly dangerous for Magnus, but there's no killing blow yet for Caruana.

-23:-52 Qd7
21

Critical situation

As expected, Caruana pushes his pawn further up the board. His attack remains dangerous, but he needs a way to break through.

A misstep from him during this phase may be fatal for his winning chances, and his commitment with his pawns has created some potential weaknesses if Magnus is given some room to breathe.

-19:-42 e5
21

Magnus quickly retreats his bishop that was under attack.

-22:-15 Bf8
22

Fantastic move by Caruana!!

He realizes that he needed to do something drastic to keep up the pressure, and finds a pawn sacrifice to keep his attack going!

While his attack is dangerous, he's now running extremely low on time!! Caruana now has 11 minutes left for the rest of the game, and finding the best moves to keep his initiative going will be far from easy.

00:-05 e6
23

??MISTAKE??

Caruana found the correct sacrifice but went wrong in the follow-up! The main issue with Magnus' position was that his light-squared bishop would be blocked in by his own pawn, and opening up the position greatly reduces his advantage on the board!

The attack still looks dangerous, but considering the time situation, all three results are possible in this game!

42:24 dxe6
24

Magnus keeps playing best moves!

An incredible find in this position leaves Magnus with fighting chances! He should now be able to defend against Caruana's attack, even with his queen exposed.

Caruana has sacrificed a pawn, meaning that a fizzled-out attack may give Magnus winning chances in an endgame.

While the position remains immensely complicated, the trend is clearly working in Magnus' favor, who now has a 10-minute lead on the clock.

-18:-25 Ra5
25

Caruana opts to move his dark-squared bishop, forcing a trade due to the discovered attack against Magnus' queen.

-07:-03 Bc5
25

Magnus retreats his queen to the only available square, keeping up the tempo.

Caruana is rapidly approaching only five minutes left, making his time situation absolutely critical!

-16:-19 Qe8
26

With 4 minutes and 39 seconds left, Caruana makes his move. Magnus' rook is under attack, and Magnus once again only has one good move to avoid being objectively worse!

40:35 Qc3
26

Magnus finds it!!

Impeccable defense by Magnus, who manages to keep the game balances while maintaining heavy pressure against Caruana's clock.

-15:-18 b6
29

Magnus escapes the attack!!

Play has simplified immensely, and Magnus has managed to escape the Caruana's attack. Caruana still has strong activity with his pieces, currently giving him compensation for being a pawn down.

We're still no closer to deciding the result, and Caruana is forced to play blitz chess from this point on.

00:12 Rxe1
29

Magnus goes on the counteroffensive, putting pressure on Caruana's knight. The knight is immune to capture, however, as Caruana can once again start a strong attack.

01:50:36 Qd8
30

Caruana finds the best move!!

With minutes left on the clock, he realizes that his knight was immune to capture and seizes the moment to regain the lost material.

Caruana has played the time scramble well so far, and may still be able to push for a win!

-02:-36 Qxc6
35

Some inaccuracies by Magnus has once again left Caruana with a strong position. Winning for Magnus is starting to look out of the question, but a draw is still within his grasp.

-02:-52 Bf5
43

??BLUNDER??

Caruana has a forced win, but will he find it with such little time on the clock?

01:17:50 g5
44

??BLUNDER??

Caruana has no time to figure things out and doesn't find the critical variation!

25:12 Nd5
47

Caruana is a pawn up, but his knight is left on the edge of the board.

A draw is now the overwhelmingly likely result, as Magnus seems to have managed to get the position under control.

01:58:48 Nxh6

We're going to Armageddon!

After the complete insanity and drama of this game, we ultimately reach a draw once all pieces have been removed from the board. Caruana had very real chances to win in this game, but his poor time management put him in a situation where he even was in danger of losing!

Magnus decided to avoid all preparation in the opening, playing an inferior move to try to catch Caruana off-guard. His decision led to an immensely complicated middlegame with dynamic chances for both sides.

Caruana played the position incredibly well, but spent a lot of time in doing so. During the critical phase of the game, Caruana was only left with around 10 minutes on the clock to execute his attack. Magnus managed to keep his position intact, but some inaccuracies of his own allowed Caruana to further press his advantage in the endgame.

Caruana managed to win a pawn in the endgame, but failed to press his advantage any further. The game reached its' natural conclusion with Magnus managing to trap Caruana's knight, forcing a clearly drawn pawn ending.
