A very solid opening choice from Erigaisi, looking to maintain his lead by keeping his pawn structure well under control.
Hikaru makes a huge decision in the center, not trading dark-squared bishops. Another strange choice by the American, as his bishop will be left passive on the kingside as a result.
Erigaisi quickly grabs control over the center with his pawn while at the same time ensuring that Hikaru's light-squared bishop remains passive behind his own pawn.
Once again it seems like Hikaru has grabbed the shorter end of the stick in this opening, but play remains dynamic.
While Erigaisi has won a pawn, the question now is whether Hikaru will be able to grab Erigaisi's strong pawn in the center. This pawn could either be a massive strength or a weakness, and the next couple of moves will, decide whether Erigaisi can push for a win in this position.
Hikaru may well be forced to go for a draw in this position, as Erigaisi's pressure will become very dangerous if he is allowed to continue pushing forward.
Only one move maintains equality, but this would entail Hikaru forcing a draw by perpetual check, harassing Erigaisi's queen.
Hikaru instead opts for active play, but Erigaisi will have the opportunity to use his far-advanced pawn to creat massive issues in Hikaru's position. The trend is not going in Hikaru's favor, as he has yet to gain any chances in this game!
Hikaru manages to reroute his knight to a very nice outpost, but Erigaisi has in turn managed to solidify his control over the light squares in the heart of Hikaru's position.
This position may turn chaotic, however, and Hikaru isn't out of it quite yet!
Massive find by Erigaisi, giving up a piece to create threats against Hikaru's king!!
Erigaisi could have pushed further and had a very promising position, but instead opts for a draw!
The resulting position would've been complicated, but Hikaru will be very happy about Erigaisi's decision.
Hikaru escapes with a draw!
Another poor opening from Hikaru leaves him in danger in game two, and Erigaisi once again had chances to win. He eventually saves the draw, but Erigaisi maintains his lead.
